Though, I like the play on morality in "Rashomon".
[Of course, he would.]

Does the library have any of his works? If not, how did you acquire this book?
no subject
I've slowly been amassing a collection of books from people I know.

So you've must have gone out of your way to retrieve this book for me?

[Going out of your way makes it sound like it was hard or dangerous or something.]

With me in mind? Well, I've been curious about the Akutagawa that you know. Though, I can't say I've come to an understanding.
I'll like to read more stories from him, but now I may be able to acquire the stories you've written as well.

It'll be an honor to read your work.

[And in the next day's mail Akutagawa will receive one copy of "The Moon Over The Mountain", a collection of Atsushi's short stories.]

I've read your collection, and I've enjoyed your stories. But what did you mean by "cowardly pride" and "arrogant shame"?
[It's not all the time you get the opportunity to ask the author their thoughts.]
I don't remember context so I'm go
As for those... Li Zheng was afraid of failing as a poet, and he wasn't modest enough to beg for teaching. That's why he wasted his talent. It takes a great deal of bravery to be be willing to try and fail, and pride can keep a person from asking for the help they need.
Cliffnotes are a lifesaver
So since he couldn't ask for help, he never reached fulfillment as a poet. And yet, he couldn't be satisfied with being a regular worker, so the weight of his failures and the dissatisfaction he has with life changed him into a man-eating tiger. Was that his way of escaping those societal pressures? It seems easier just to live in the wild.

Maybe that's why he approaches Yuan Can and laments to him about his life choices. It's obvious he wants to connect to his human side, even if he abandons it out of both pride and cowardice.

[Unless they're the other Atsushis, then they're fine.]

Humans are full of contradictions. We want to be respected as greater than others, but we don't want to be bothered by people we consider lesser to us. We want not to have to deal with the pressures of society, but we want to have the company of other people.

People don't realize it though, the hypocrisy they play into. Only Li Zheng comes to that realization when he becomes a tiger. It's unfortunate.

You said writers write because their lives are unfulfilled, so their stories express that void. I don't expect anything happy to come from that, but it's more relatable.
